MatterGen is a generative AI model developed by Microsoft Research that designs stable, novel inorganic materials with specific properties. Unlike traditional methods that involve screening existing compounds, MatterGen directly generates new materials by adjusting their 3D crystal structures. It has been fine-tuned to produce materials with desired magnetic, electronic, and mechanical properties. One of the generated materials, TaCr₂O₆, was synthesized and its properties were measured to be within 20% of the target values, validating the model’s design capabilities.
